Matthew’s Story

Matthew's Story

The Foster family received a gift from God on February 23, 1981 a son they named Matthew. He was the fifth child in a family that would grow to a total of 8. Just before Christmas in 1996 Matthew was diagnosed with cancer. He put up a terrific fight in his 25 month battle with this terrible disease.

On January 29, 1999, less than a month before his 18th birthday and before Matthew could graduate with his high school class, God called him back home.

Matthew had been a true blessing and had been a very positive influence on his family and everyone he met. The Matthew Foster Foundation was established one month after his passing to continue his positive impact. The Foundation’s mission is to assist families with children that are suffering from cancer by providing financial assistance to cover some of their extraordinary costs. Some, but not all, types of assistance consist of payments for rent, medical expenses, co-payments, insurance, gift cards for food and gas, car repair and funeral expenses when the child loses their battle with childhood cancer. We provide assistance to an average of 42 WNY families each year including 6-7 families with funeral expenses.

The Foundation works very closely with Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Essential Care, Oishei Children’s Hospital and other local organizations. These organizations identify families of children with cancer that are having a difficult time with the huge financial burden that accompanies their battle. After these needs are identified and qualified the Foundation provides families with financial assistance.

We do all of these things in the memory of our son, our brother and our friend, Matthew.

MFF Hall of Fame

We celebrate the accomplishments and salute the efforts of our

Matthew Foster Foundation Wall of Famers and Matty Award winners.

Western New York relies on the selfless generosity of others to provide many types of contributions that make our communities better places to live. When either companies or individuals contribute time and/or financial support, they deserve the Matthew Foster Foundation recognition and show of gratitude.

WirelessZone – Outstanding Sponsor

In 2009 Dave Bogart, of WirelessZone, knew of the foundation and he made the effort to contact us about sponsoring the gala, I thought it was a terrific opportunity. We truly appreciate their support over the years.

Attendance

Danny and Hollie Morrison – They were at our first gala at Kotecki’s Grove and have supported us  with both their attendance and working with us on a number of our raffle packages.

Attendance

Jim and Lori Reuther – They too were there in 2004 when we started. Besides their attendance they also have been great in helping us with a number of great donations for raffle items.

Life Time Achievement

Kurt Kaul (Baldone) – Has been very important to us right from the first gala and before. He has been key in getting donations for each of our events and also has made great contributions in bringing many people to events.

Most Value Player – Phil Petoniak of Upstate Pharmacy – Upstate has sponsored many of our golf tournaments over the years. Besides his sponsorship he too donates raffle items for our events and brings a number of people to both our golf tournaments and galas.

Angel Zachara – Our guardian Angel, has been part of our family from the start of our childhood cancer experience. She was there for Matthew when all of this started. She has been a great supporter as long as we can remember. Like some of the other award winners she and her husband have been great in supporting us with both bringing people to our events and donations.
